FDA issues Valsartan Recall

It is estimated about one out of three American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be a dangerous condition. Furthermore, high blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Unfortunately, dozens of medications that are commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure have been recalled. Investigators discovered some of these medications could potentially contain known carcinogens. Which is why there is a valsartan recall in effect.

To find out if your blood pressure medication is effected by the Valsartan recall contact your prescribing doctor. Discuss what options will be best for your situation and discuss alternate medications (list of medications that are contamination free). Several lots of blood pressure medications have already been recalled by the FDA. Contact us for more information on the Valsartan recall.

What blood pressure medications are being recalled?

This year alone many lots of valsartan medication have been recalled by the FDA. In fact, there is a website listing specifically which lots of valsartan have been recalled.

The FDA announced a voluntary recall of losartan medications starting last year. Over the past year, many lots of losartan tablets have been added to the recall list. You can see the full list here.

Additionally, the FDA also announced a voluntary recall of irbesartan tablets. These are not listed on the FDA’s website as of yet however, there is a list of affected products. The recall involves tablets that were created in China.

Why is Valsartan Being Recalled?

Certain lots of these medications may contain potential cancer-causing chemicals NMBA and NDEA. The amount of NMBA and NDEA found in these drugs exceeds acceptable levels. These contaminations may have been present in these medications for up to four years. Additionally, the drugs being recalled all share manufacturing origins in India and China. In order to learn more about how the drugs came to be contaminated, the FDA will continue investigating.
